West of Saxapahaw

On a random road, in a random storm
Travelin’ where I ain’t been before
Got down to my knees, hugged the nearest tree
And said, “I can’t take it anymore.”

Won’t you save me Lord, I know I’ve sinned
But it’s a long road to haul.
I need some kind of sign, something to ease my mind
Down here west of Saxapahaw.

It seems like Tuesday, I was in Africa,
Searchin’ for God only knows
Lions and tigers*, rhino and elephant
They only made the old pain grow

And the witch doctor, didn’t have the spell
I’d been searchin’ my life for.
And all the roots and herbs and antler dust in China
Didn’t leave me with a cure.

Chorus

I took the great train across Asia
Thinkin’ the answer was near.
Set my feet down, back in America
and realized my greatest fear.

‘Cause on a random road, in a random storm
I think I finally failed the test
But there’s a gleam of light, yeh, there’s a ray of hope
Shining somewhere to the west.

‘Cause I know somewhere, someone’s thinking of me
And that’s what makes it worth it all
And already, I’ve found salvation
Down here west of Saxapahaw
And already, I’ve found salvation
Down here west of Saxapahaw.

*Yes, I realize there are no tigers in Africa. It’s just a song.
